Trauma Informed Care

PSALM 34:18 NIV

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Trauma Vs. Complex Trauma

Someone that has gone through trauma has experienced an event that is extremely physically or emotionally overwhelming. A lot of people find “traumatic” to be opinion-based, but some events are so stressful that most people would find them traumatic. In the past, many people believed that only physical harm or danger caused trauma. We now know that emotionally stressful events can also cause trauma, particularly in the absence of support or a parental/caregiver figure.

Trauma can include anywhere from:

  • Natural disasters

  • War and conflict

  • Being a victim of a crime (ex. being raped, assaulted, held up, or car-jacked);

  • Being involved in, or witnessing, a serious accident or exposed to death, injury or violence;

  • Complicated or violent childbirth; enduring painful or degrading medical procedures)

  • Interpersonal violence or abuse

  • and Serious lack of care, emotional connection, or neglect, particularly when a baby or young child, including prolonged separation from caregivers.

Complex Trauma is a particular type of trauma that goes beyond a one-time incident. It is trauma that is ongoing; is difficult or impossible to escape from; occurs within a personal relationship; begins in childhood, affects a child’s development; and is covered up, kept secret, or denied. In cases of Complex Trauma people are often harmed by someone in a position of power over them. Survivors usually feel that they have been unable to escape. This leads to chronic feelings of helplessness.

Common causes of Complex Trauma are child abuse and domestic violence. However, Complex Trauma is also seen among people who have survived imprisonment, torture, or sex trafficking. Being a refugee or being exposed to long-term conflict can also cause Complex Trauma.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Many people associate PTSD with war and combat, however, that is not always the case. Any severe trauma or a life-threatening event experienced or seen— whether during a time of war or in a noncombat situation — you may develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress, or what is commonly known as PTSD. It may be an event involving actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violation. Maybe during the event, you felt as if your life or the lives of others were in danger or that you had no control over what was happening.

    • Easily upset by things that remind you of what happened

    • Having nightmares, vivid memories, or flashbacks

    • Feeling emotionally cut off from others

    • Feeling numb or losing interest in things you used to care about

    • Feeling constantly on guard

    • Easily irritated or having angry outbursts

    • Difficulty sleeping

    • Trouble concentrating

    • Easily startled

 Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

 Accelerated Resolution Therapy, also known as ART, is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that utilizes back-and-forth eye movements to help clients address common problems such as:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Panic Attacks

  • Phobias

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Traumatic Experiences

  • Relationship Issues

  • Grief

It is not the same as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), however both use eye movements. The brain, while focused on a problem and concurrently using eye movements, makes new connections with a person’s strength and problem-solving abilities. You will be in total control of the therapy. This is not hypnosis and you will be speaking to me just as you would during a session that does not involve eye movements.

ART produces quick, effective, and safe results in treating the issues mentioned above. The evidence to date shows that the changes made using ART are long-lasting and its benefits are achieved within 1-5 sessions.
